Description

Ami was the first Senshi to be discovered by Usagi. During battles she is the strategist since she is typically the ‘brains’ of the Sailor Scouts. As Sailor Mercury, she has the ability to manipulate water. She has always been extremely smart, and her peers view her shyness as being stuck-up. She’s never had very many friends because of this. Though her IQ is well above average, she doesn’t like to brag or flaunt her intelligence. The approval of her mother and teachers has always been important to her, but she has become more confident in herself over the years. Out of all the scouts she usually has the most common-sense and is mostly the only one embarrassed when one of them (usually Usagi) has a dull-witted moment.

At the beginning of the series, she attends the same junior high as Usagi and Makoto. Most of her free time is spent studying and reading because she wants to become a doctor like her mother. Ami does enjoy art and science, as well as romance novels though she’s embarrassed to admit it. She can become obsessive about her grades and often scolds Usagi and the rest of the scouts for not doing their homework or getting detentions. Her attraction to boys her age is both displayed and kept secret, depending on if she thinks they’ll return her feelings. She will even go as far as changing her schedule to avoid a boy if she’s afraid that he’ll reject her. Swimming and chess are two more of her favorite pastimes. If she isn’t at the library or fighting evil, she’s most likely in the pool. Mathematics is her strong point, as is computers.

Her parents are divorced and she lives with her mom. Ami’s mother is a workaholic, and openly resents not having more time to spend with her daughter. Though her father is never named, he is said to be a painter. He doesn’t visit Ami and her mother, but he does send postcards on her birthday. She seems to share some of his artistic talent when she composes a song at one point, and doesn’t really resent the divorce as much as she does in the manga.

While in public she often wears glasses, though she doesn’t need them. Eating lunch on the roof is one of her daily routines, since she usually studies while snacking. Usagi is the only one at first to spot that Ami is merely shy and not snobbish, and gradually brings her out of her shell into being more social. At one point her mother wants to transfer her to another school but Ami refuses, spending the night at the Sailor hide-out with Rei Hino.
There was a short special on her called ‘Ami’s First Love.’ During this mini-movie it is exam time, and Ami is competing with a person codenamed Mercurius for the highest test scores. The competition becomes obsessive, and she is studying day and night in an attempt to beat him. The scouts say that it is love, but Ami denies this, stating that she merely wishes to prove to Mercurius that she is smarter. She receives a love letter from the mysterious super-genius, and falls ill with fever from the shock. In her disorderly state she is attacked by a monster called Bonnon, but manages to fight it off. She decides that it is best to never meet Mercurius, finally going back to her normal school routine.
